Colby Mammoth Site
The Colby Mammoth Site is located on private property 2.5 miles east of Worland on U.S. Highway 16, where there is a historical marker. There is no admission fee, and the site — best viewed during daylight hours — is open year-round when the weather permits. This site is also handicapped accessible. Artifacts must not be removed from the area.
The excellent Washakie Museum and Cultural Center at 2200 Big Horn Avenue in Worland displays an exhibit dedicated to the Colby mammoth discovery. For more information, contact the museum at (307) 347-4102.
An additional display, located at the University of Wyoming Anthropology Department Museum at 12th and Lewis in Laramie, Wyo., houses some of the Colby mammoth remains. For museum hours, contact the UW Anthropology Department at (307) 766-5136.
